    A message from Stew Price:

I’ve logged quite a few ski days at Beaver Creek over the years, and I have to tell you it is one of the finest ski resorts for a mix of skiers of all abilities (like, for a ski club).  This mountain has it all:  19% “greens”, 52% “blues”, and 39% “blacks”.  If you’re a “casual” skier, Beaver Creek’s big blue groomers are the best in the world, and if you’re a “wild one”, Beaver Creek’s Birds of Prey World Cup downhill course will make you humble!  If you’re looking for a change of pace, Vail is a 20-minute bus ride away and is included in your lift ticket.

‘Not exactly roughing it’ is Beaver Creek’s campaign slogan, and for good reason.  The slopes are meticulously groomed and uncrowded, the lifts are all high-speed, and there are freshly baked cookies waiting for you at the bottom of the lift!  Most of us have learned that ski-in/ski-out accommodations make all the difference in the world.  Our 3-bdrm Highlands condos are literally on the slope.  You take the elevator from your room down to the bottom floor locker/ski storage, suit up, and carry your gear out the door a whole ten feet and snap in.  You can take the private “Highlands Lift” up, or take the ski trail down to the village lifts.  Not exactly roughing it.

We’re planning some great social activities with this trip, with a wine and cheese reception when we arrive, a couple of apres ski socials, and a “margarita night” that you won’t want to miss.  There are many great restaurants in the village, and with a free continuous shuttle, everything’s an option.  Also included with our stay at the Highlands is complimentary access to the Allegria Spa, for those of you who want to really indulge yourselves.

Nancy and I hope you’ll join us at Beaver Creek this season.  If you haven’t been there yet, you need to do it.  If you’ve been there before you know what I’m talking about!

This is a great venue for us.  Lots of seating near the bar with appetizers and signature drinks.  If you want dinner Michael’s is next door and other restaurants such as Jacksons across the street.  There is parking across street under the Soho shopping area. This will be our second time to have a social here.  The first ski club group to socialize there gave it a thumb’s up.          In December and January we have some new and interesting locations for you to visit at our Friday Night Social.  I had the help of Brenda Siragusa, Elizabeth McElroy, and Cindee Holladay in selecting these places.  We visited all of these new place to taste their wares.  I know it was a sacrifice for them (Ha) but they hung in there with me until we had seen and sampled some of the food and drink at all of these places.  We hope that you will enjoy them as we did.  At some point in future we will survey the club to see which should remain on our list and if some might need to go to second string.  In the meantime if you want to make a comment about any of these places email us at:   We value your input, because the Friday Night Social is for the enjoyment of all club members and to help us keep in touch with one another on a regular basis.  See you Friday!!  Linda, Reed, President

Ski Heavenly Valley, South Tahoe Area, – Few ski resorts can match the magnificent beauty of Heavenly Valley, thus its name.  There are scenic views of the emerald colored Lake Tahoe on one side and the desert of Reno on the other side not to mention the scenic Sierra Mountains.  Heavenly is the area’s largest ski area.  The mountain averages 360 inches of annual snowfall covering 4800 acres of skiable acres with a 3500 foot vertical drop.  You can ski across from California to Nevada.  It is a skier and snowboarder heaven.  There are 20% beginner, 45% intermediate runs, 30% black, and 5% expert.  There are 28 lifts.

And, if you don’t care to get risky on the expect slopes, go to the casino nearby and rick a little money gambling.  Or, take an Emerald Bay Cruise on Lake Tahoe’s Emerald Lake.  Two hours with views of mountains and cascading waterfalls.  Then, there is the glass gondola you can ride 2.4 miles up the mountain. You will see breathtaking views of Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range.  You can hop off half way at observation deck for spectacular sights and photos.  Heavenly also has many restaurants, a mall for shopping with an ice rink, and spa.  All these activities are near the Gondola in the Village.  Your hotel, Forest Suites Resort, where breakfast is included, is located under the lift in the village... Additionally, there are also four different ski areas in the region where you can use the same lift pass.  They would require getting a shuttle or renting a car to reach.  Shuttles can be arranged at the Marriott and price depends on numbers in van.  Get your party together and go to one of these places.

Kirkwood – Atop Sierra Crest with some of driest lightest snow in the Tahoe region.  2300 acres of terrain from calm groomed beginner runs to hair raising blacks.  There is something for everyone at the “Wood”, skiers and snowboarders.  There are 13 lifts with 12% of runs beginner, 30% intermediate, 38% black, and 20% expert.  Long groomed trail, expert areas, and chutes to ride.

Squaw Valley – Olympic Valley is one of largest ski areas in the US, hosted Olympics in 1960, second only in size to Heavenly Valley.  Has 30 chair lifts... Alpine Meadows, another ski area has merged with Squaw and they have joint access.  Squaw receives heavy snowfall, and 4000 acres of skiable area.  Longest run 3.2 miles, 15% Beginner, 35% Intermediate, and 50 % Black

Northstar – Located near Northshore of Tahoe 3,000 acres of ski terrain.  Impeccable grooming, incredible tree skiing and a variety of terrain suitable for any level, beginner to expert.  Slopes are 16% beginner, 47% Intermediate, and 37% advanced (blacks), with 13 lifts.  Longest run 1 mile.  Also contains 9 world-class terrain parks and a 22 foot superpipe designed by Olympian Shaun White.

    • The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar at the Summit, 105 Summit Blvd, Birmingham, AL

Let's try this out AND hope for no snow!      This is our first time to visit this new place at the Summit with great reviews on food and service.  They have a large bar area that would easily accommodate our group.  Also, when I spoke with Manager he is excited about the Ski Club planning a social here.  Look at their menu online, very interesting food and drinks.  Prices are moderate, and it is basically a burger, sandwich, sushi type place, with an eclectic range of foods, like Crispy Calamari appetizers to Grilled Salmon BLT sandwiches.  The drink list looks interesting, and a good selections of wine and beer.  They have shakes with unbelievable flavors.  How about a, Peanut Butter Nana Time Shake (vanilla vodka, banana liqueur, ice cream, fresh bananas and peanut butter cups).  Neat place.

    A message from Sharon Pardue:

Whistler is a town north of Vancouver, British Columbia, that's home to Whistler Blackcomb, one of the largest ski resorts in North America.  Besides skiing and snowboarding, the area offers snowshoeing, tobogganing and ski jumping at the Olympic Park, a venue for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.  The hub of Whistler is a compact, chalet-style pedestrian village at the base of Whistler and Blackcomb mountains.  W
histler is a true winter wonderland and was ranked as the # 1 North America Ski Resort for off-hill activities by Ski Magazine in 2015.

Think of Whistler Village as your home away from home, with added mountains.  A stroll along the stone walkways will reveal all the creature comforts you need (plus a few luxuries you really want).  And when it's time to escape, the great outdoors is just steps away.  From casual après-ski snacks to fine dining, Whistler's award-winning restaurants offer diverse dining options with many featuring organic, locally sourced ingredients.  Satisfy your cravings with a multitude of places to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner with price ranges to suit every budget.

You will experience an unparalleled perspective of British Columbia while riding the longest and highest lift in the world.  The world record breaking PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola was built for sightseers, skiers and snowboarders alike and joins Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains meaning you do not have to choose which mountain to spend your day on.  Whistler has it all: 200 marked runs, 8,171 acres of terrain, 16 alpine bowls, and 3 glaciers.  Whistler Mountain has 20% “greens”, 55% “blues”, and 25% “blacks” and Blackcomb Mountain has 15% “greens”, 55% “blues”, and 30% “blacks.

Conveniently located in the heart of Whistler Village, the Delta Whistler Village Suites is the perfect full service getaway.  The Delta Whistler Village Suites’ offers beautifully appointed one and two bedroom suites, fully equipped kitchens, in-suite washer/dryer, balconies, fireplaces, 1 heated outdoor pool and 3 hot tubs, saunas, and fitness center.

We’re planning some great social activities with this trip, with a wine and cheese reception when we arrive, a couple of apres ski socials, and a group dinner that you won’t want to miss. I hope you’ll join me at for this wonderful trip to Whistler BC.
